Every letter on this sheet was written before it was set. Running through each one is a skeleton, the line a hand would follow, and a pen was drawn along it. An edged nib keeps its angle the whole way, so a stroke is heaviest where it crosses that angle and finest where it runs along it: turn the nib, and the weight travels round the bowls.

A round pen leaves one weight everywhere. A pointed pen is flexible and spreads under pressure on the downstrokes, so the shading follows the hand rather than the edge. Lean the skeleton and the face becomes an italic; stand the nib on end and the stems go thin while the crossbars thicken.

Nothing here was drawn as an outline. Each outline is only what the pen left behind, and each letter is spaced by the room its strokes take up. Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow. How vexingly quick daft zebras jump!
